My Exotic African Princess

I did Charlie's hair for the second time last night, while she was sleeping. I'm finding it challenging!
1) I have never paid much attention to any hair, my own or others
2) I've never had experience with black hair
3) I'm not coordinated in the fingers
4) Charlie will NOT sit still, she is so observant that she is constantly swinging her head around to see what's going on behind her. So I have started doing her hair while she's sleeping... which means it's not divided into quadrants very well

But I'm trying!

So last night, after doing her hair during a nap, I decided we needed to protect the hairdo until morning (because we are meeting blogger friends Laura and Tami today! Yay!) and I want Charlie looking her cutest. I know black women wear hair scarves and the like to protect their hair do's and keep them looking fresh. So this is my attempt.

How cute is she????

(Yes, every post will probably be mentioning her cuteness from now on.)

Anyway, the scarf thing did not last long! She pulled it off seconds later, messing up her hair a bit.

This morning, it's almost as messy as if I had not done it at all.

Back to the drawing board!

Moms.... do you use anything on your infants heads to keep their hair neat? And where do I buy it????

i can offer you no suggestions since we don't have her home to do her hair yet, but i have to tell you that the look on her face in the "scarf gone awry" picture is priceless!

She is so cute Mitchell!

She is probably a little bit too young for a head wrap. She will always pull it off. She is still a baby, so all you have to do is comb her hair everday and it will be fine. No need to wrap it at night time.

I love that she is trying so hard to see what is on her head!

OMG! She is so adorable!! She won't keep the scarf on so you'll probably just have to do her hair in the mornings. My friend keeps a small bottle of water mixed with conditioner for her kids hair. It really helps ease out any tangles and fuzzies throughout the day. Co-washes (conditioner washes) are also preferable for black hair. Shampoo can be really drying so always dilute it with water. You'll notice that her hair is 100%easier to manage when it's moisturized properly. Let me know if you need any help! -Sharla

Don't sweet it too much, she's still a baby. Just add a little moisturizer and a barrette and roll.

She is sooooo beautiful! I use nothing to keep Mal's hair okay- i just spritz and do in the morning. Get her used to sitting while you do it- TV, snacks (when she was a baby, it was her bottle) and never tug. She'll soon know it's time and just go with the flow :)

Hi Joyce!
You finally commented! Yay! It's only been, what... 6 months of daily reading? I'm glad you finally took the plunge ;-) I miss you! Say "hi" to my fellow SWs, would you? I'm coming back to town on Thursday, maybe I'll stop by early next week. Hope you will be there. Comment if you are taking a day off and I'll make sure not to stop by then.
I loves me some Joyce comments! Yay!

I enjoyed meeting you today!!!!! You are awesome and Charlie is beautiful with a wonderful personality. You are very blessed to have her as a daughter. :-)

Now, head scarf? LOL I've NEVER worn one. Don't sweat it, we all don't. Plus she is too young. I do sleep on a silk or satin pillow case though. I spritz my hair in the morning and I'm good to go.

Suave Humectant(sp?) Conditioner (white bottle, blue writing about $1.69) is your friend.
I use it on the little girls I care for and it works wonders on their kinky textured hair. Smooth it through her hair, towel dry and comb it out. It will look nice for a few hours. After that you can just dampen her hair down and fluff it out.
She will look beautiful. As long as her hair doesn't get matted up, don't worry about it.

She's as cute as she can possibly be!!!

Do you have any African American friends who could give you pointers? Perhaps you could take her to an African American beauty shop once, and they could tell you what to do and how to do it.

Since she is just a baby, her hair hasn't set itself into its permanent texture just yet. Also, remember that "Black hair" can mean so many things and textures!

I would recommend staying away from products meant for adults or older kids hair. A little water and super gentle baby conditioner is all you need. And most Black mothers don't wrap their young children's hair in scarves at night. It's not very practical and dangerous to boot!

Good luck with your beautiful daughter!
